Mattresses are meant to be supportive, cradle your pressure points while you sleep, and overall give you a way to retail your spinal alignment and prevent injuries.
Sometimes, comfort can be left out of the equation, or whittled down quickly after you start sleeping on the mattress. Many companies try to make sewn-in, integrated pillow tops, but once those fade out, you’re left with an awkward place to sleep.
It’s even worse when you’re a side sleeper. We made this list of the best mattress topper for side sleepers models to give you an edge over your sleep.
You shouldn’t have to trade off comfort for support, so with these toppers, you’ll be able to get back to what matters the most: sleeping soundly and comfortably, whether on your left or right side.
Best Mattress Topper For Side Sleepers – Reviews & Buying guide for 2020
Best Overall: COONP Queen Mattress Topper
Nothing is worse than having a pillow top give out on your after a few weeks. That’s what those crummy sewn-in ones do that come attached to most mattresses; I’ve yet to see many sewn-in pillow tops that actually hold on for more than a month or so.
COONP comes in to save the day. First and foremost, the entire thing is machine washable – no more using a cleaning brush and scrubbing the top of your sewn-in pillow top.
With sizes available from twin XL up to California king (and above), you’re basically set no matter what size bed you have.
WIth 6.5 inches of thickness, you’ll have a nice layer of padding that puts distance between you and your mattress.
The deep pockets along the entire length of this mattress topper give you a good amount of spots to alleviate pressure from laying down, so you won’t just sink into the center of it if you lay in the middle of the bed.
Each of those deep pockets are elastic, which means you can toss and turn without warping this throughout the night. With a 360° wrapping method, you can just attempt your best wrap-job without having to be precise on the corners. It makes setup an absolute breeze.
Price-wise, this is a fantastic purchase for this amount of coverage. As time goes on, you will wear this in, which is going to happen with any mattress topper (or mattress, for that matter).
It sleeps cool for a long time, but will eventually heat up as you wear it down. COONP is simply the best option to have that cool period last for as long as possible.
As a little bonus tip, if it feels worn down, toss it in the dryer for about ten minutes on warm.
The motion of your tumbler dryer mixed with the heat will revitalize some of that comfort, and make it easier to maintain throughout the years of owning it. Oftentimes, this will last three to five years for most people.
Runner up: Sleep Innovations Dual Layer Memory Gel
The last thing you want when you’re using your pillow top sleeper is to sneeze it up. You don’t want it to trap more dust than your mattress already is.
That’s why Sleep Innovations made this entirely hypoallergenic, which helps when you wash it as well. Water can travel through the fibers well, making washing more effective on cold and delicate cycles.
There are two reasons people want mattress toppers, and those are comfort and support. Sleep Innovations does a healthy balance of both. This 4 inch topper gives you a decent level of depth, while also ensuring support on top of comfort.
Due to the gel memory foam included in this construction, you’ll be able to cool down quickly in the middle of the night. Shifting in your spot or simply moving around will give you a nice cool spot to sleep on, no matter what.
This almost took the top spot, but as you can see, the pockets aren’t really deep. This is designed for use in a bed with two people, though it will perform better in a single sleeper bed.
You have the choice between enhanced support or ultra soft support, so depending on how you and your spouse sleep, you have two choices to decide on.
It’s a mattress topper for side sleepers that comes with an incredible warranty. We often find that products built in the United States offer the best warranties, and Sleep Innovation is giving you a gesture of good faith with an impressive ten-year warranty.
It covers a lot, but also gives you the knowledge that Sleep Innovations is really backing their product, because no company is looking to fulfill warranties. They’re hoping that they don’t have to, and making sure of it in their quality.
Alternative: Linenspa Gel Infused Memory Foam Mattress Topper
As the second best memory foam mattress topper for side sleepers, Linenspa comes in with more support than comfort, and as a result, you don’t have as high of a price tag.
With a heavy focus on keeping your body supported and your spine aligned, Linenspa offers a 2” thick gel-infused memory foam mattress.
That might not sound like a lot, but when you really look at what two inches of coverage does, it makes a huge difference.
Where this isn’t super soft, it provides enough stability to cradle your pressure points before relying on the mattress for support. This allows your body to rest heavily on certain areas, and a little bit lighter in others.
Linenspa offers sizing options from a twin bed all the way up to a California king, and they give you another option if you want to upgrade your purchase. They have this same pad in a three inch variety, which you should use on a king or California king-sized bed to allow for extra weight distribution.
If your older mattress is starting to feel too lumpy, or it has you waking up with lower back pain and tingling arms, it’s time to offer yourself better support.
Linenspa offers you an extensive three-year warranty on this as well, so even if you put it through the ringer for a thousand days, you’re still under their coverage plan.
This inexpensive mattress topper effectively allows you to extend the life of your current mattress, while incorporating the effects of cooling gel embedded into the memory foam.
This will stay together for those three years, but depending on how hard you sleep, you might wear it down. Memory foam isn’t meant to last forever.
This doesn’t come with its own cover; it’s just a sheet of foam, so be careful around dogs and children when you pull the sheet off to change them out.
Alternative: ViscoSoft Pillow Top Memory Foam Mattress Topper
Tired of just having memory foam and nothing else?
ViscoSoft knows that people want the firmness of memory foam, while also sleeping cool and not having too much heat retention on top.
With 2.5” of memory foam and 1.5” of a down alternative, you have a completely hypoallergenic solution.
That being said, memory foam is always going to come with a bit of an odor that you have to air out. ViscoSoft is no different: this takes about three days for any scents to disappear.
I recommend putting a fan on one side, and having an open window on the other to try and expedite this process.
I mention this because ViscoSoft makes a statement about changing their chemical makeup to reduce the smell of their mattress, but regardless of what brand you go to, there’s always going to be a little trace of it.
You have the option to choose from a twin to a California king size for this, and the total 4” thickness goes a long way. I would argue that on a California king bed, it’s just a little too thin, but it’s up to you to decide.
It’s comfortable, but because there are no deep pockets for extended support, it can feel a little lacking on this big bed.
The cover is completely removable, so washing it will be a breeze. It’s a solution to the exact problem that sewn-in pillow tops give you. Overall, it keeps you cool and alleviates pressure on the problem areas of your body – it’s like sleep therapy for the top of your mattress.
What type of mattress topper is best for side sleepers?
We’d argue one that has both memory foam and a softer, more breathable material.
Still, people enjoy the durability of memory foam, which is why ViscoSoft gives you an impressive five-year warranty on this mattress topper, on top of a 60-day money-back guarantee. They stand behind their quality and their product.
Alternative: LUCID Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper
LUCID came in as the best mattress pad for side sleepers that also sleep hot, because the gel included in this memory foam does a fantastic job of actually cooling you off in the middle of the night.
Memory foam is known for retaining tons of heat, which is why they’ve gone above and beyond to keep things on the lower side of the thermostat.
Choose from a twin size up to a full California king bed, granting ventilation regardless of your size. Since this is four inches thick, you might run into a bit of a problem with the largest size and feeling a dip in the middle.
This topper is simple foam: there are no pockets for support, or sewn-in elements up top.
There’s no cover here, so you’re going to need a set of sheets with a little extra give. Thankfully, there are plenty of sheet manufacturers that make sheets for this specific situation.
As you might imagine, when you open this slab of foam up, it’s going to have an odor to it. I recommend letting it ventilate.
It takes about four days for the scent to go away, but if you drop it on your bed right away, the aroma will linger for two weeks while it slowly dissipates.
They offer a middle-of-the-road warranty, which lasts for three years from your purchase date, effectively giving you over a thousand days to enjoy this topper and put it through hell and back.
As long as you’re using it as intended, it should hold up and be applicable for a replacement should you need one.
LUCID also offers excellent customer service, from your order down to email inquiries and beyond. They’ll be the first ones to tell you if their toppers do or do not fit your lifestyle and needs.
Best For The Money: EASELAND Queen Size Mattress Pad Topper
While they weren’t the top choice on our list, EASELAND is a solid brand with a lot to offer.
They come across as one of the best-selling mattress toppers out there, and that’s because of the options they give you. It’s one of the only toppers that fit the ever-elusive Olympic Queen bed.
As one of the best mattress toppers for side sleepers, it also comes with a very soft top that helps cradle your pressure points. This is all cotton, so you’re not dealing with memory foam at all.
There’s an allergen barrier beneath the cotton top that protects you from the dust in your mattress, and helps by preventing any more from getting in.
That topper is made with 300 thread count cotton, making it feel super soft through your sheets, and especially upon direct contact.
I don’t recommend sleeping without sheets, but if you do, EASELAND makes it nice and comfortable to do so. Everything feels nice and soft to the touch.
Your entire mattress topper is washable, so you can just throw it right into the washing machine to get a nice, perfect clean out of it.
Because this is cotton, just be careful: you want to use a cold/delicate setting and a low heat on the dryer to ensure it doesn’t fray the top. The last thing you want is a lint-covered top that you can feel through your sheets.
This mattress topper is also super light, so it won’t feel heavy when it’s resting on top of your mattress.
It sleeps nice and cool, which is always a big concern any time you buy a mattress topper. The cotton breathes as easily as you will at night, knowing you’re on one of the most comfortable spots you’ve ever slept on.
Runner up: Milemont Queen Mattress Topper
Milemont comes in as a good budget-friendly option, but doesn’t hit home on every aspect that we were really hoping for. That being said, it’s inexpensive, and has small punctures throughout it to help direct airflow.
That helps, but this memory foam does sleep a little bit hot. It takes about four or five hours to hit that point, but when it heats up, you should have a spot to move over to if it ends up waking you up.
It does a decent job of ventilating your bed at night, but with sheets, comforters and pillows, it can’t handle it all. Even though this is gel-infused, it just comes in under the wire for a lot of its cooling potential.
You get a total of 1.5”, which helps with comfort more than it does with support.
This memory foam is a little softer than the stuff inside of your mattress, giving you an extra layer of comfort on an otherwise worn-in mattress. It works for both memory foam mattresses and traditional spring mattresses.
Available from twin up to California king, you have the option to outfit your bed regardless of its size, and for a fraction of the cost that other brands are charging.
When buying from Milemont, the phrase “You get what you pay for” comes to mind. They’re not masquerading as anything – this is a budget-friendly option that offers less coverage, but more than what you currently have.
Now, with all that being said, I do want to give credit where credit is due, because Milemont does give you a ten-year warranty on this topper, which is practically unheard of.
There’s a catch, though: you have to register this within 30 days of the purchase date, meaning if it takes a week to get to you, you only have 21 days to actually register, or your warranty is null and void.
At only 9.8 lbs, it’s not expensive to mail back, so I would recommend making it a priority to register for that warranty.
Mattress Topper for Side Sleepers Buying Guide & FAQ
What’s the Point of a Mattress Topper?
For many people, it’s about comfort. The top of your mattress gets worn down, and you have to find a better way to sleep comfortably at night, without shelling out a low four-figure amount for a new mattress. Nobody just has that cash laying around.
Mattress toppers are inexpensive, so you can grab one and prolong the life of your mattress by two or three years, and actually enjoy sleeping on it again.
But that’s not the only reason. Many people also get mattress toppers for additional support on an otherwise clunky or lumpy bed.
Even if you were sold a great mattress that promised to take the pain away, this isn’t always the case. Sometimes you run into mattresses that just don’t live up to the hype. These mattress toppers give you the support you need.
Do Mattress Toppers Make You Hot?
They can make it hotter to sleep for sure, which is why you have to go above and beyond and find one that really lives up to its expectations. It’s why you’ll see a lot of gel infusion in memory foam, because memory foam notoriously sleeps hot.
We’ve gone the length here to make sure these toppers don’t make you sleep hot. It’s a problem that you see with one type of topper, which you’ll notice we are not promoting on this list.
That’s the sewn-in topper. These come attached to your mattress right from the get go, making it impossible to remove them or clean them properly. It’s a real hassle when it comes down to it.
Because a pillow top is not meant to survive for the entire length of your mattress, in most cases at least, it should be removable and easy to clean.
You can’t exactly take the attachment of your wet vac across your sewn-in pillow top mattress topper. Moisture seeps in, mold grows, and it’s a whole problem.
Because you can’t clean them, they don’t get that nice fluff in the dryer that brings a bit of bounce back to them. You’re stuck with a worn-in mess, but with attachable pillow toppers, they remain airy and breathable, so you don’t end up sleeping hot through the night.
Are Mattress Toppers Good for Side Sleepers?
Yes, mattress toppers can help with a wide array of problems that side sleepers face.
Because your weight is coming down in a less dispersed manner, such as when you sleep on your back, you’re putting more strain on your body. Primarily, your shoulder (the one you are sleeping on), hips, and your neck.
Side sleeping isn’t as bad as stomach sleeping, but you still want to avoid all of those problems if possible.
To do this, your body needs to have its cradle points pressured to protect you from harm. Memory foam mattress toppers do a fantastic job at helping you stay supported through the night.
Are Memory Foam Mattress Toppers Good for Side Sleepers?
That all depends. There are a few things to look into first before you know if it’s actually going to be good for side sleeping.
- Gel-Infused: This draws heat away from your body while you sleep. Because memory foam sleeps hot, gel infusion allows these little beads to suck in heat like a vacuum, and disperse it to the bottom half of the mattress. This ensures you’re not feeling that pocket of heat just reverberating back to you, making you sweat in the middle of the night. These toppers are good for side sleepers, because you tend to sleep hotter because you’re blocking one of your ears while you sleep (which lets off a lot of heat).
- Thickness: Someone with a lighter body weight is going to have a better time sleeping on a thin, two or three inch mattress topper. Whereas someone with a higher BMI will put more pressure on it, and require a thicker topper to actually supply any level of comfort or support. This also accounts for multiple sleepers—if this is a topper for you and your other half, consider the total weight going onto it. Side sleepers put more stress onto a mattress or topper than a back sleeper does, so you will sleep harder and sink further into a topper.
- Layers: Some mattress toppers will have a cotton top and a foam bottom, giving you comfort and support as you sink into the topper. This is something every side sleeper should look for, since memory foam can help cradle pressure points, while the soft cotton top can help you relax and fall asleep without tension on your body.
In short, memory foam toppers are good for side sleepers, so long as you get one that keeps you cool, has the layers that you want, and is thick enough to support you.
Is a 2-Inch Mattress Enough?
For a mattress topper, two inches is what I would call enough, but not what I would call comfortable. You really need to have about four inches of your mattress topper to be comfy.
Two inches will give you additional support, especially if it’s a gel-infused memory foam mattress.
This allows your pressure points to be cradled, as the weight from your torso bears down on the mattress topper, your neck doesn’t – it only goes down as much as it needs to. This ends up giving you more support for your neck and spinal alignment.
Side sleepers benefit from this the most. When you side sleep on a lumpy mattress that doesn’t provide you any support, you’re bending your spine in a low, swooping arc, which puts major stress on your vertebrae.
You want to avoid that at all costs, so even a two inch memory foam mattress topper could help with that.
Do Chiropractors Recommend Memory Foam Mattress Toppers?
You’ll find that chiropractors actually recommend memory foam in general more often than spring mattresses. The thing is, spring mattresses can offer you great comfort and support, but it fades quickly. Memory foam is far more sustainable in this regard.
Chiropractors are known to swear against any type of pillow top mattress. That’s the first thing people hear, and then go, “So pillow tops are bad. Got it.”
That’s not the whole story. Sewn-in pillow tops are considered bad because once they wear out, you can’t even flip your mattress to alleviate the wear and tear. You’re just stuck with it.
Memory foam does an excellent job of helping you sleep securely, even if it can sleep hotter than a spring mattress. That’s actually why a lot of people get half-and-half pillow tops with a cotton top and foam bottom. It’s the comfort you want, and the support that you need.
What’s a Better: Memory Foam or Gel Mattress Toppers?
Why not both? Most memory foam mattress toppers come with gel infused inside of them. If you’re not sure why, I’ll let you in on a little not-so-secrety secret: memory foam sleeps hot.
While it claims to be nice and cool and relaxing, memory foam absolutely holds onto heat. That is, until you get up, and then it releases it all in the span of ten minutes.
But while you’re laying on it, you heat up the entire mattress. It makes things sweaty and uncomfortable.
That’s why manufacturers started including gel infusion with their memory foam: the inclusion of gel beads that are either powdered and built into the foam during chemical composition, or laid throughout the foam.
The goal of these is to pull heat away from your body while you sleep.
When your body heats up and transfers that warmth into the memory foam, the gel acts as a heat sink and pulls it all away. That gets trapped in the gel, and dissipates into the deeper parts of the mattress that aren’t usually getting all that heat.
From here, it basically fizzles out and chills down again while the gel pulls in more of your body heat. It works well under most circumstances, but it’s been known to be cutrate in lower quality productions.
Topped for Comfort and Support
Your mattress wears down over time, but it still provides you with support while you sleep.
You don’t have to toss it out and start over – augment your current mattress, and revitalize your comfort. Apart from being easy to attach to your bed, they’re also going to change the way you sleep for the better.
Memory foam is going to be the obvious choice here. It’s light, inexpensive, and thanks to gel infusion technology, they’re more breathable than ever.
If having better support as a side sleeper is half the reason you came here, just know that memory foam can do exactly what you need it to do.
